I never thought I’d be the kind
I never thought I’d be the kind of guy who would catch his girlfriend cheating on him, but life had a way of throwing up unexpected situations. For three years, Mia and I had what I thought was a solid and loving relationship. Sure, there were ups and downs, but I always thought we were doing well together.
That was until last Friday. All week I had been looking forward to our date.Work had been rough and I just wanted to relax with Mia, maybe go out to dinner and watch a movie. When I asked her about our plans, she sighed tiredly, not even looking away from her phone. “Alex, no way tonight,” she said. – “I’m swamped at work, a lot of stuff to do. Maybe next week?” Frustrated but understanding, I said it was okay. Everyone gets busy, and I didn’t want to seem like a pushy guy. So I decided to meet my friend Mark for a drink. An hour later, we were already sitting in a bar downtown when Mark suggested we go to a late show at the cinema. It seemed like a great distraction, so I agreed. We bought tickets, got popcorn, and got comfortable.
But as soon as the trailers ended and the lights went down, I noticed something that made my heart sink. A few rows in front of me, Mia was sitting, but not alone. She was laughing, leaning into some guy, their heads close together, whispering something. His hand was resting casually on her chair, as if they’d been dating forever. I felt anger boil up inside me. My heart was pounding so hard I could barely hear anything.
I didn’t want to believe my eyes. Maybe it was just a coincidence. Maybe it was an old friend. But then she turned slightly, and I saw her smile-soft, flirty, the same smile she’d once given me. Mark nudged me with his elbow. “Dude…isn’t that Mia?” I nodded, clenching my jaw so hard it hurt. I could have gone straight to her, made a scene, demanded an explanation. But instead, I forced myself to calm down.
I wasn’t going to give her the satisfaction of seeing her break me. “Let’s go,” I whispered to Mark as I stood up. I needed to think, to process everything. But most of all, I wanted to teach Mia a lesson she wouldn’t forget. the next day, I kept my cool. I didn’t text or call her. I wanted to see if she’d talk about last night. sure enough, in the afternoon, she texted me. “Hi, honey, how was your evening? I hope you had a good rest! I’m still swamped at work.” Work? Good move, I replied casually. “Yeah, just hanging out with Mark. I hope you got everything in time!” she sent a heart emoji, not even realising that I knew everything. I realised then – she didn’t even feel guilty because she thought she hadn’t been caught. That same night I decided to put my plan into action. I called Mia and told her I had a surprise for her. “I know you’re really tired right now, so I planned something special for you,” I said, making my voice excited. “Wear something pretty. I’ll pick you up at seven.” she sounded excited. “Alex, that’s so sweet! I’m looking forward to it!” I waited too. At exactly seven, I picked her up and drove her to the expensive restaurant she’d long dreamed of. I watched her order her favourite dishes, her eyes shining as she told me how thoughtful I was. And then, as she reached for her glass of wine, I leaned in slightly and quietly asked, “So… how was the movie last night?” Her hand froze. The blood rushed from her face. “W-what?” – She mumbled. I tilted my head to the side. “You know, the one you went to with that guy? The one you lied to me about?” Her mouth dropped open, but no words came out. I pulled out my phone and slowly flicked through the pictures. “I even have a snapshot. In case you need a reminder.” she swallowed. “Alex, I can explain…””No need,” I interrupted. “I just wanted to give you one more special night before you lost me forever. “I got up, put the money on the table and walked away, leaving her sitting in stunned silence.Mia tried calling and texting me for days, but I didn’t answer. One day she even came to my house, but Mark was there, so I asked her to leave.Did it hurt? Of course. But I learned something important. When a person shows you who they really are, believe them. Mia lied to me for who knows how long. She disrespected me, abused my trust and thought I’d never find out. But I did. And instead of letting her break me, I left with dignity. It was a real lesson. For both of us.
