Meghan Markle pays heartfelt tribute to Princess Diana over Mother’s Day weekend

Meghan Markle paid a heartfelt tribute to her late mother-in-law Princess Diana over the weekend.

While the Duchess of Sussex and her husband Prince Harry were on a three-day tour of Nigeria, Meghan accessorized one of her outfits with a diamond cross pendant that once belonged to the late Princess of Wales.

People reported the necklace, a diamond cross on a gold chain, was a recent gift from Harry, which came from his mother’s private collection.

Meghan often pays homage to her late mother-in-law whether it be through fashion or wearing a coveted piece of jewlery.

During the couple’s trip to the African country, Meghan was spotted wearing a gold collar necklace that looked eerily similar to the one Princess Diana wore when she visited Nigeria in 1991.

The Duchess of Sussex had also been spotted wearing Princess Diana’s gold Cartier Tank Française watch, one of Meghan’s favorites.

It’s been said that Princess Diana wrote each of her sons a letter asking them to pass along her jewelry to their future wives.

“I would like you to allocate all my jewellery to the share to be held by my sons, so that their wives may, in due course, have it or use it”, the Princess reportedly stated to both Prince William and Harry.

Meghan’s engagement ring was designed by Harry using diamonds from his late mother’s collection.

“The ring is obviously yellow gold because that’s [Meghan’s] favourite and the main stone itself I sourced from Botswana and the little diamonds either side are from my mother’s jewelry collection, to make sure that she’s with us on this crazy journey together,” he told the BBC during the couple’s first sit-down interview.

On May 11, Meghan Markle honored her late mother-in-law in a subtle way. At an event the Duchess of Sussex attended with her husband, Prince Harry, in Abuja, Nigeria, she wore a diamond cross and gold chain necklace, which caught the attention of eagle-eyed royalists.

According to People, the necklace was recently gifted to Markle by Prince Harry and once belonged to his mother, Princess Diana.

This isn’t the first time she’s paid tribute to Diana through accessories. In 2018, Markle stepped out in Diana’s butterfly earrings, and she wore one of her aquamarine rings on her wedding day. Prince Harry also used two diamonds from his mother’s personal collection for Markle’s tri-stone engagement ring, which he designed before his 2017 proposal.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are in Nigeria as part of the 10th anniversary celebrations of the Invictus Games, co-founded by Harry. The trip comes more than 30 years after King Charles and Princess Diana visited the same region in March 1990.

As part of their trip, Harry and Markle visited a school in Abuja on May 10, where the Duchess was photographed wearing a gold collar necklace, which resembled a necklace worn by Diana during her trip to Nigeria three decades prior.

At the school, she also gave a rare update on her two children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.

“She’s about to turn three. And a few weeks ago, she looked at me, and she would just see the reflection in my eyes. And she [goes], ‘Mama, I see me in you,’” the Duchess said. “I hung onto those words in a very different way. And I thought, yes, I do see me in you, and you see me in you”
