The incredible rescue of River: A horse given a second chance

Every animal lover knows the joys and responsibilities that come with caring for our beloved four-legged companions. Through good times and bad, we stand by their side.

Unfortunately, the world is full of people who don’t share the same love and commitment. Some abandon their pets when they grow tired of them, leaving them to fend for themselves. Stories of abandoned puppies or kittens are sadly common, but cases involving horses are much rarer.

That’s what makes River’s story so extraordinary. This beautiful, almost mythical white horse was found in terrible condition, left alone in a park in the middle of the night in Modesto, California.

A Shocking Discovery

Very little is known about River’s past or his previous owner, but given his condition, it was clear he had suffered from neglect.

One fateful night, a father and son were out fishing when they heard a vehicle approaching. As they listened, they became aware of the distressed sounds of a horse. At first, they dismissed the noises, assuming it was nothing unusual. But moments later, they witnessed a heartbreaking sight — an emaciated horse, more skin and bones than a healthy animal should ever be.

Realizing the urgency of the situation, they reached out to their contacts and the authorities, eventually connecting with Bobbi Carne, a woman with two decades of experience in rescuing animals.

A Desperate Fight for Survival

When Bobbi arrived, she saw just how dire River’s condition was. He was severely underweight, with painful pressure sores all over his body. His face and side bore injuries, likely sustained during transportation, as he had not been properly secured in the trailer when he was abandoned.

With the help of a dedicated team of volunteers and local residents, Bobbi rushed River to a veterinarian. He weighed less than 485 pounds—far below the minimum healthy weight of 840 pounds for a horse of his size. His condition was alarming.

Determined to give River a second chance, Bobbi and her team transferred him to Hold Your Horses, an organization dedicated to the care and rehabilitation of rescued horses.

A Long Road to Recovery

Thanks to the generosity of the organization and its supporters, River received extensive veterinary care, specialized nutrition, and essential supplements to help him regain his strength.

His rehabilitation was a slow and carefully monitored process. He was placed on a strict diet to help him gain weight gradually, preventing any additional health complications. With time, regular checkups, and a lot of love, River began to recover.

A Bright Future

Today, River is thriving. He has found a permanent home on the ranch, where he is surrounded by other rescued horses who have become his new family. His once fragile body is now strong, and he shines with health and happiness.

Bobbi and her team’s unwavering dedication transformed River’s life, proving that kindness and compassion can heal even the deepest wounds.
