Hidden Phone, Hidden Affair

I FOUND AN OLD FLIP PHONE HIDDEN DEEP INSIDE MY HUSBAND’S WORK BOOT
I saw the corner of the faded CVS receipt sticking out from under his nightstand and felt my gut twist immediately. It was the same date he’d claimed he was working late inventory but smelled faintly of a cheap floral perfume I didn’t wear. My hands were trembling as I reached for it.
He walked in just then, tired lines around his eyes, asking what I was doing snooping. “This receipt,” I managed, my voice tight. “It’s not right. Where were you?” The air grew heavy and thick between us.
He sighed, running a hand through his hair. “It’s just… work stuff.” His gaze wouldn’t meet mine. That’s when I remembered the boots by the back door, always dirty. I went straight there, plunging my hand deep into the right one, past the rough leather lining. My fingers closed around something hard and rectangular.
I pulled it out. An old flip phone, dusty and scratched. It buzzed silently in my palm, vibrating with dozens of unread messages. My heart hammered against my ribs as I flipped it open, the screen lighting up my face in the dim hallway light. He just watched me, silent.
Then the screen lit up with a notification: “LOCATION SHARED WITH LISA”.
👇 *Full story continued in the comments…*”Lisa,” I breathed, the name a venomous whisper on my tongue. My vision blurred, the hallway seeming to tilt precariously. I scrolled through the messages, each one a fresh wound. Texts filled with pet names, inside jokes, and coded promises of future meetings. The “work stuff” receipt suddenly made horrifying sense.
He remained frozen, a statue carved from guilt and shame. “It’s not what you think,” he finally stammered, the words hollow and unconvincing.
“Then what is it, Michael?” I demanded, my voice cracking. “Tell me right now what this is.”
He closed the distance between us, reaching for the phone. I recoiled, holding it out of his reach. “Don’t touch me,” I hissed.
He dropped his hand, defeat etched on his face. “It… it started a few months ago. A colleague at work. It was just… harmless flirting at first. Then it… escalated.”
“Harmless?” I repeated, incredulous. “These messages… the location sharing… is that harmless?”
He hung his head. “I know. I messed up. I never meant for it to go this far. I swear, I was going to end it.”
The tears finally came, hot and stinging tracks down my cheeks. “You lied to me, Michael. You betrayed me. How could you do this?”
We stood there for what felt like an eternity, the silence punctuated only by my sobs. The hallway suddenly felt cold and vast, a chasm had opened between us that I wasn’t sure we could ever bridge.
I backed away slowly, clutching the phone like a weapon. “I need some time,” I managed to say, my voice thick with emotion. “I need to think.”
I walked out, leaving him standing alone in the dim hallway, the flip phone a damning piece of evidence in my trembling hand. I didn’t know what the future held, but one thing was clear: the foundation of our marriage had been shaken, and I needed to decide if it could be rebuilt. I drove to my sister’s house, the image of “LOCATION SHARED WITH LISA” burned into my mind, the silence in the car deafening.
