A little orphan boy cries in a church, begging God to send his mother to take him. The next minute, he turns pale when a voice answers behind him, saying, “I’ll take you.”
A series of unexpressed emotions are linked to children abandoned by their parents. Alan, a neglected six-year-old, was one of them, desperately searching for his mother without ever having the chance.
One day, during a chance encounter at church, little Alan’s world changed. He cried, asking God to send his mother, explaining how different his world would be if she were with him.
In the midst of his loud cries and comforting argument with God, a strange voice spoke up behind him, offering to take him…
“Dear Jesus, they say you hear everything. My guardians in the foster home told me to knock on your door and ask for anything I need. I want my mommy. Can you please send her to me?”
“Alan, my boy! I have come for you. I have come to take you home.” Alan wept as he clasped his hands in prayer and looked at the crucifix. His eyes were painfully red and his soft, rosy cheeks were wet.
“My nanny told me you answered everyone’s prayers. So why don’t you answer mine?”
The hallway echoed with Alan’s cries. His heart was broken. He didn’t want to go back to the home, where the children often made fun of him. They constantly teased him, saying that his mother would never come back and that he had no choice but to wait for someone to adopt him.
“No one would be interested in taking in a crybaby like you,” were some of the harshest things he heard from the other children at the home. Alan cried his heart out that day, demanding an answer from God.
“Alan, shush!” interrupted his caretaker, Nancy. “This is a church. Be quiet and don’t cry. People are looking at you. Please calm down.”
Alan tried to control his tears. He kept staring at the crucifix until he saw a woman with a child entering the church. He could no longer hold back his tears and started crying again.
“Jesus, you’re not answering me. Please, I want to be with my mommy like this girl. Nanny, why isn’t Jesus answering? You told me he answers all our prayers, but why hasn’t he told me anything?”
Nancy looked at the boy and smiled at his innocent questions.
“I’ll take you,” a woman’s voice suddenly said behind them. “Baby, I came for you. Please stop crying.”
Alan and Nancy were surprised. They turned around and behind them was the woman with the child that Alan had seen moments before.
“Alan, my boy! I came for you. I came to take you home,” she cried.
“Who are you? How do you know the child’s name?” Nancy asked, holding Alan tightly.
“My name is Annette. I am Alan’s mother. I come here every day to see him and make sure he is okay.”
“Your son? Do you have any proof?”
Annette pulled out a photo of herself holding a newborn baby. “I left him on the doorstep six years ago.”
“It’s unbelievable. That’s what Alan looked like when I first found him on the doorstep that night, in the rain. I heard a baby crying outside on the patio and found him there. Why did you leave your baby? How can you be such a heartless mother?”
Annette began to cry and revealed the saddest story of her life.
Six years ago, she was 16 and accidentally got pregnant with her boyfriend’s child. After she told him, he left her and moved to another state, blocking her from contact. Annette’s parents advised her to terminate the pregnancy, but she couldn’t do it.
“My parents gave me only one choice: abandon my baby or forget about them and the inheritance I would receive. I was too naive and young to become a mother, so I left my newborn at home and moved on.”
Annette added that she had finished her studies and married another man. The girl with her, Amy, was her daughter from that marriage.
“I tried my best, but I couldn’t forget my son. I often come to this church to watch him from a distance. But after hearing him cry for his mother today, I couldn’t hold back any longer. I want to take him home.”
Annette quickly began the legal process of gaining custody of Alan. She had DNA tests done on him, revealing that they were mother and son with a 99% match. Although she managed to bring Alan back home and restore their relationship, it came at a high cost.
Annette’s parents turned on her and cut her off from their life and inheritance. Worse yet, her husband turned on her despite knowing the truth about her troubled past.
“I married you because you were honest about your failed relationship with your ex-boyfriend and I thought you would never want this child. But now, even your parents have disowned you. Look, I am not ready to be the father of a child that is not mine. I am ready to financially support my daughter, but our marriage is over,” her husband Jason says, immediately filing for divorce.
Annette and Jason were divorced soon after. Annette was granted custody of her daughter and was overjoyed to have Alan back.
“Don’t ever come begging us for money again,” were the last words she heard from her parents, and Annette was content with that. She felt complete, even without her parents’ approval or their money.
She moved abroad with her two wonderful children, found a good job and was looking forward to one thing: living a happy life.
