Meghan Markle ‘Would Have New Royal Title’ if She Was Not Duchess of Sussex, Experts Confirm
An expert has said she doesn’t think Harry and Meghan will ever lose their titles, even if they are stripped of their Royal status.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle may have stepped back from their Royal duties, but they will always retain their Duke and Duchess of Sussex titles, an expert has claimed.
Despite their 2020 departure from the frontline of The Firm, they have continued to use their Duke and Duchess of Sussex titles as they complete charity work and build the Sussex brand.
Calls for them to be stripped of their Royal status have surged, especially as they capitalise on their titles for lucrative contracts with giants like Netflix and Penguin House.
However, even if their Royal titles were officially rescinded, a Royal commentator believes that wouldn’t mean a complete loss of their titles.
Ingrid Seward, Editor in Chief of Majesty Magazine, shared her insights on The Royal Beat, asserting that Harry and Meghan are unlikely to ever be divested of their titles. She elaborated: “I don’t think anything will happen to the titles because, if they lose their titles, Harry is still a prince of the blood and Meghan instead of being the Duchess of Sussex, [would] be Princess Henry.
“That really would [confuse the Americans]. I think [it’s] probably best just to leave it because it looks unkind, it looks unnecessary.”
She further commented: “The Queen gave them the titles, let them keep them – they’re going to be ‘H and M’ anyway. I think the best thing is to leave them, ignore them, and let them get on with it – which is really what the Palace and the Royal Family are doing.”
Prince Harry’s full name is Prince Henry Charles Albert David and according to Royal tradition, a princess can adopt a princess title but only using her husband’s name upon marriage.
This would mean Meghan could be known as Princess Henry, however, she is more commonly referred to as the Duchess of Sussex, the Countess of Dumbarton and Baroness Kilkeel.
The same applies to Princess Kate, whose official title is Princess William, in addition to being the Duchess of Cambridge, the Countess of Strathearn and Baroness Carrickfergus.
There has been intense discussion over whether Harry could lose his Royal sovereign title if he were to fully embrace US citizenship. To obtain a US passport, Harry would need to take the Oath of Allegiance, which necessitates him to “renounce all allegiance to any foreign prince, state or sovereign.”
The complete oath states: “I hereby declare, on oath, that I absolutely and entirely renounce and abjure all allegiance and fidelity to any foreign prince, potentate, state, or sovereignty, of whom or which I have here to fore been a subject or citizen.”
