Prince Harry and his father, King Charles, have had a rocky relationship for many years. In the Duke’s book Spare, Harry repeatedly bashed his father, revealing devastating details about his childhood and how Charles had handled Princess Diana’s death.
While Harry is no longer part of royal life, family will always be family. That also means that they, of course, will resemble each other, and that also goes for King Charles and his son, Harry. To mark Prince Charles’ 70th birthday in November 2018, the royal family released photos of the now-king that hadn’t been seen before.
It didn’t take long before royal fans went into meltdown – as it seems King Charles was once the spitting image of his estranged son.
While Harry grew up, his brother, Prince William, was being prepared for his future life as monarch. Meanwhile, Harry would live in his brother’s shadow as a senior royal family member and prince.
William was the firstborn son of King Charles and Princess Diana, and of course, when not only a royal baby but also a future king was born, interest was enormous. The same went for Prince George, the first son of Prince William and Kate Middleton, and will most likely continue to do so for all royal babies welcomed into this world.

Princess Diana claimed Charles rather wanted a daughter when Prince Harry was born
When Harry was born, King Charles and Princess Diana had already mastered the art of fooling the press to get some privacy. Since then, the monarchy has been modernized. But at that time, a baby was expected to arrive relatively soon after the wedding.
Princess Diana felt enormous pressure when it came time to give birth to her first son, Prince William. In Diana: Her True Story, author Andrew Morton wrote that Diana felt the pressure was “unbearable” and even tried to pick a day when Charles wasn’t playing polo.
When William was welcomed into the world, there was great excitement. Yet when Harry arrived a few years later, Charles appeared less thrilled.
In Diana: Her True Story, Diana claimed that Charles always wanted a daughter and barely hid his disappointment when he saw Harry for the first time.
“I knew Harry was going to be a boy because I saw on the scan,” she explained. “Charles always wanted a girl. He wanted two children, and he wanted a girl. I knew Harry was a boy, and I didn’t tell him.”
“First comment was: ‘Oh God, it’s a boy,’ second comment: ‘And he’s even got red hair,’” Diana added.
“I was brought into the world in case something happened to Willy”
Moreover, Charles allegedly expressed his disappointment when Harry was christened. According to the late princess, Charles told her mother: “We were so disappointed – we thought it would be a girl.”
“Mummy snapped his head off, saying: ‘You should realized how lucky you are to have a child that’s normal.’ Every since that day, the shutters have come down, and that’s what he does when he gets somebody answering back at him,” Diana said, adding that as Harry was born, their marriage “went down the drain.”
It is no secret that Harry was unhappy with Charles’s actions after his mother’s death. Harry mentioned that he believed that, as the Spare title reveals, he was his family’s “spare” member. He even claimed he knew he was born in case his big brother William needed blood or an organ donation.
“I was the shadow, the support, the plan B,” Harry wrote. “I was brought into the world in case something happened to Willy, I was summoned to provide backup, distraction, diversion… This was all made explicitly clear to me from the start of life’s journey.”
Today, Harry can count himself a veteran of significant royal events. Sadly, one of his first big ones was the funeral of his mother, Princess Diana.
In the early hours of 31 August 1997, at approximately 12.23 am, Princess Diana’s car crashed in the Pont de l’Alma tunnel in Paris, France. She received lengthy treatment by medics at the scene but suffered a cardiac arrest while in the ambulance.
Just 15 minutes after arriving at the hospital, Diana suffered another cardiac arrest. Doctors performed a surgical procedure, but Diana’s injuries were sadly too grave.
Her heart would not restart, and the beloved princess, to the shock of the world, died.
Prince Harry recalled moment Charles told him about his mother’s death
The passing of Diana was a national tragedy. More than 39 million people in the UK watched her funeral on television. Globally, it’s estimated that more than 2 billion people watched it, making it one of the most-watched broadcasts in history.
Millions mourned the princess, but of course, as is always the case, her family carried the deepest wounds.
Harry recalled when he got word of his mother’s passing in his book, Spare. He described how his father sat beside his bed, telling him: “Darling boy, Mummy’s been in a car crash.
“There were complications. Mummy was quite badly injured and taken to hospital, darling boy,” Harry recalled his father saying. “He always called me ‘darling boy,’ but he was saying it quite a lot now. His voice was soft. He was in shock, it seemed.
“With a head injury. They tried, darling boy. I’m afraid she didn’t make it.”
The prince further claimed that Charles put his hand on his knee, saying: “It’s going to be OK,” but that he “didn’t hug” him.
“Everyone knows where they were and what they were doing the night my mother died,” Harry stated.
“I cried once, at the burial, and you know I go into detail about how strange it was and how actually there was some guilt that I felt and I think William felt as well, by walking around the outside of Kensington Palace.”
“There were 50,000 bouquets of flowers to our mother and there we were shaking people’s hands, smiling,” he continued. “I’ve seen the videos, right, I looked back over it all. And the wet hands that we were shaking, we couldn’t understand why their hands were wet, but it was all the tears that they were wiping away.”
Prince Harry & King Charles – relationship today
Harry and William walked behind Diana’s coffin as the procession reached Westminster Abbey. Years later, Harry would eventually slam the decision to make the two young boys – who were 12 and 15, respectively, at the time – walk through London with the world watching.
“My mother had just died, and I had to walk a long way behind her coffin, surrounded by thousands of people watching me while millions more did on television,” he told Newsweek in 2017. “I don’t think any child should be asked to do that, under any circumstances. I don’t think it would happen today.”
The relationship between Prince William and Prince Harry has been at a low point for years, and they reportedly only speak to each other if necessary.
Shortly after King Charles’ cancer diagnosis was made public, Prince Harry traveled to the UK to be at his father’s side. Some reports also suggested that he could return to royal duty if everything felt right. However, if William decides that it is out of the question,
A few weeks ago, William and his father met at Sandringham, where a source told the Mirror that there is “no chance” the future king would allow Harry to ever return to royal life.
“Whatever has been discussed between William and the King is private, but it is absolutely and categorically clear that he (William) would not allow Harry to return. He thought it was a bad idea at the time and he’s even more clear now,” the source said.
As Prince Harry returned to the UK to briefly see his father, the royal expert stated that William had “got used to Harry being rude, unkind, and attacking his wife.”
Meanwhile, it’s well-known that Harry had issues with Camilla as a teenager. In his book Spare, he portrayed her as an alienating figure within the royal family. He also gave her quite the cruel nickname, the “other woman.”
Camilla ‘outraged’ with Harry after meeting with Charles following cancer diagnosis
Camilla was said to have been hurt by Harry’s words. But as her husband is now facing a difficult time with cancer treatments, and Harry briefly returned, she won’t back down.
According to a National Enquirer source, as per the Mirror, Harry left Camilla “outraged” and even asked him to leave.
“Her Majesty was furious Harry flew in from his ritzy California home without getting palace approval – and came with an attitude. I’m told Camilla was outraged. She’s taken a lot of bile from Harry for years and couldn’t wait to let him have it,” the source said.
The source continued: “Camilla has taken it all on the chin, but using her husband’s cancer as a ‘loving son’ PR stunt was the last straw. After the father-son reunion, I hear she told Harry he’s a disgrace to his father, the family, and the monarchy – and she left no doubt he isn’t wanted back!”
Even though Harry’s relationship with his royal family is at a low point, the family will always be family. King Charles hasn’t seen his grandchildren, Prince Arhcie and Princess Lilibet, for a very long time, and it appears that the Sussexes don’t have any plans to visit soon.
Meanwhile, Harry will always be Charles’ son, and when looking back, it turns out that the two have an uncanny resemblance. Sure, one will always look somewhat like their son or daughter, but Harry’s similarities with Charles compared to William are something else.
Photos reveal incredible similarities between a young Prince Charles and Harry
Several members of the royal family look alike. Recently, one such similarity was between Princess Charlotte and her great-grandmother, the late Queen Elizabeth—and now, the same thing has come to light between Harry and King Charles.
Of course, there will be plenty of similarities between Harry and Charles. However, as Harry grew a beard, pictures of a young Charles resembled his son in more ways than expected.
Pictures of a young Prince Charles from 1976 began spreading, and royal fans could not help but notice that he looked just like his son.
The picture was part of a selection shared by the royal family to mark Prince Charles’ 70th birthday.
While William once tried growing a beard, it was a short-lived experiment. On the other hand, Harry has rocked it for many years, and as fans realized how much he and Charles looked alike, social media went wild.
As per Express, one fan posted on X, formerly known as Twitter: “He looks so like Prince Harry.”
Another added, “Seeing the photos of Prince Charles when he was younger, you can really see him in Prince Harry.”
“I love that one prince looks like his mother and the other like his father,” a third wrote, while a fourth stated,” The bearded look is Prince Harry to a T.”
